Echo Flex - Plug-in mini smart speaker with Alexa

I received two Echo Flex devices today. I'd read all the one-star reviews before ordering, so I was prepared to send them back if they were as awful as some folks say. But when I unboxed them and plugged them into outlets, I was glad to see how quickly and automatically they connected to my wifi. Ready to use in about a minute or less.

Yes, those who say the audio is tinny are right. Not at all as good as my Echo Dots, Echo Show, or the original Echo tower. But the two locations where I wanted to put the new devices aren't areas where the quality of the audio matters: living room and bathroom. So far, Alexa has had no problem hearing me, nor have I had trouble hearing her. I even tested the living room one to see if Alexa could hear me when the TV is on. I raised my voice only slightly above conversation-level. No problem. I also heard her despite the TV's audio.

I noticed that the Flex in my bathroom sounded louder than the one in the living room, so I put the living room one in the bathroom to compare them. No difference. My guess is that the Flex sounds louder in the bathroom because it's a tiny room, while the living room is considerably larger. Also, I'm closer to the Flex in the bathroom (about 15" when standing at my washbowl) than in my living room where I am across the room from it (about 9').

The one glitch my living room flex has is the volume control. The bathroom's volume is set at 100%, but the living room's volume is stuck at 70%. Now, having said that, it sounds just like the 100% volume on the other Flex. I tried repeatedly to boost the volume to 100%, following the directions in the app to do that, but no luck. I have emailed support to see what I can do to get it to 100%, but truthfully it doesn't matter.

As just about everyone says, the Flex is not suitable for listening to music -- but I decided to give it a try. I told Alexa to play Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do". It was far from good, but it was also nowhere near horrible.

All in all, I'm pleased that I decided to replace my clunky Dots which were hanging from the outlet in holders (to keep from having to deal with cords). The Echo Flex is *much* better aesthetically, and it meets my needs.
